Preschool Week of 2/4

Phew, this was some week. Crumpet was sick, my car was sick, the cat was sick. I was an emotional mess. But we're starting to see the light now. Crumpet is still having trouble focusing after our recent trip, so our learning happened in 5 minute bursts here and there. Here's what we tried to accomplish:

Phonics:
I printed out these letter sounds cards from the Prekinders site here. (Check out this site, it's awesome!) Each snowman has a letter on it, and lots of pictures. We put markers on each picture that started with the appropriate letter. Crumpet loved this and asked for it several times during the week. We did not practice any reading - he just couldn't stay still long enough this week.
Language:
We practiced story sequencing with cards I found here. Another big hit, and it resulted in Crumpet memorizing several nursery rhymes this week.
Math:
We used these mitten matching cards from the Prekinders site again. He had to count the mittens and find the matching number on another card.
We used these cute cards from Tired, Need Sleep. The link is here. Crumpet counted the hearts and put the clothespin on the correct number. Counting has been a bit of an issue this week (1, 2, eleventeen, a hundred - just pure silly boy...) so we didn't get far with either of these math games.
I got two 24 piece truck puzzles for $1 each at Target. Crumpet has never done a puzzle with this many pieces, and he's not usually a puzzle kid, but he did pretty well with these.
Nature:
We found a great hiking trail nearby. Someone has nailed up toy bugs and frogs along the trail, so it's a great scavenger hunt activity. We'd done it before, and this time we went with a friend of Crumpet's. The 2 boys ran the entire trail, and saw very few bugs this time, but still had a blast.
Crafts:
Crumpet was in a rare crafty mood, so we did lots of Valentine's crafts and other activities one day. We made these cute heart thumbprint magnets from this site:
And these cute heart people from here:
Check out these two links:
This is a phenomenal list of resources and links from Amber at Refined Metals Academy. Seriously, check this out. But plan to spend some time there. I still haven't been through the whole list!
And this is a site with lots of great books at great prices. They are sorted by curriculum, season, etc. on the left hand side for easing browsing. They are having a sale this month, so go shopping!

Enjoy. Have a great week!

  1. I am sorry that it was such a hard week. It might appear sometimes from my posts that we are studying non-stop here, but believe me - most of our "school" happens in 5-10 intervals with some play in between. And Anna is also not really into puzzles yet - I hope she will like them one day soon :)

  2. We have days where we are lucky to sit for 5 -10 minutes at a time. I think it is normal for kids this age. Our learning truly happens in spurts throughout the day right now.

We do have some days the attention span is better and we get a lot more done in one setting.

    I love the heart projects!

  3. Sorry you had a rough week. But you got much more done than we did. We had 2 birthdays, 2 BBQ's and a wedding. But the only thing educational was that Quince read some to his dad. Hopefully next week will be better for both of us.

  4. I think you're being too hard on yourself! It looks like you had a great week. The thumb print magnets are adorable! I think Crumpet is very observant to notice the frogs on the nature trail. Hang in there, you're on the right track!Blessings!:)
